Teaching the Way
Students Learn Best
by Caitlin Corrigan
I
n 2020, we are looking forward to seeing more
prepared, professional teacher candidates
from diverse backgrounds enter the classroom
feeling proud of their path and ready to teach. The
evidence is becoming clear: when students have
opportunities to learn in a safe, structured back-
ground with well-supported teachers from diverse
backgrounds, everybody wins.
We were impressed and inspired by a recent report
published in the Learning Policy Institute. Authors
Jacqueline Ancess, Bethany Rogers, DeAnna Duncan
Grand, and Linda Darling-Hammond explore some
best practices from a New York high school. The
report, titled "Teaching the Way Students Learn Best:
Lessons from Bronxdale High School," is worth a read
in its entirety https://learningpolicyinstitute.org/prod-
uct/social-and-emotional-learning-case-study-bronx-
dale-report, and we are so grateful to have received
permission to
print the Executive
Summary as part
of our celebration of this year's commitment to be
"Proud to Promote Diversity and Equity in Education."
Please enjoy the read, then join us for a break-
down on how the latest findings can help new
teacher candidates prepare for a successful entry
into the classroom.
